Source: Samuel P. Bates’ History of the Pennsylvania Civil War Volunteers, 1861-65, located in the Chester County Historical Society Library, West Chester, PA.

Vol V, pp. 1147-48

lists Theodore Woodward of Company K, 16th Regiment, along with other Kennett area names as volunteers for the Battle of Antietam ( known as Sharpsburg in the South). The unit was organized September 17, 1862 [Theodore B. Woodward’s 19th birthday] and discharged September 25, 1862.
The Village Record newspaper of West Chester, PA reported in its Tuesday, September 16, 1862 issue that "Mr. W. W. Taylor of Kennett Square informs us that he telegraphed Gov. Curtin on Sunday morning [Sept. 14] that a company, numbering 80 men, was at his command for immediate service. They are all volunteers from Kennett Square and Kennett Township and are considered some of the finest men in the County. They are commanded by Captain Joseph McMullin."

The fierce Battle of Antietam Creek (Maryland) was fought on Wednesday, September 17, 1862. After his defeat, Lee would make no further attempts to penetrate the North until the following July at Gettysburg.
