lists Theodore Woodward of
Company K, 16th Regiment,
along with other Kennett area names
as volunteers for the Battle of Antietam
( known as Sharpsburg in the South).
The unit was organized September 17,
1862 [Theodore B. Woodward’s
19th birthday] and discharged September
25, 1862.
The Village Record newspaper
of West Chester, PA reported in its
Tuesday, September 16, 1862 issue
that "Mr. W. W. Taylor of Kennett
Square informs us that he telegraphed
Gov. Curtin on Sunday morning [Sept.
14] that a company, numbering 80 men,
was at his command for immediate service.
They are all volunteers from Kennett
Square and Kennett Township and are
considered some of the finest men
in the County. They are commanded
by Captain Joseph McMullin."
The fierce Battle of Antietam Creek
(Maryland) was fought on Wednesday,
September 17, 1862. After
his defeat, Lee would make no further
attempts to penetrate the North until
the following July at Gettysburg. |
